What is non-destructive testing?
Non-destructive testing, or NDT, enables materials testers to see what is happening within a device or structure, without using any destructive techniques. In the past, it was necessary to make a hole in a wall, to see behind it. It was also necessary to access, and potentially remove, components of electronic devices, to ensure they were safe.
Technology has now advanced to the point where NDT methods such as ultrasound, x-rays and magnetic testing can be used instead. This means that there is no need to be invasive or destructive, during the testing process.
How does NDT improve safety?
As we mentioned earlier in this article, we tend to notice when things go wrong. We forget that each day we use objects such as laptops, refrigerators and TVs, and encounter no problems at all. Problems do sometimes occur, but they are rare, and manufacturers usually introduce further testing as a result.
The fact is that materials testing, using NDT techniques, helps to make sure that we are protected from danger on a daily basis. No-one thinks of remaining safe as a major story, but it’s actually one of the most important stories of all.
NDT does not just help preserve the safety of the general public; it also makes materials testing safer and easier. It’s a lot safer to use technology to see through a wall than it is to have to knock a hole in the structure to take a look. It’s also easier and quicker to be able to use scanning and imaging to produce instant data concerning the safety of a material or product.
Materials testing is something that most people do not even think about. But, it’s vital if we want to ensure that items we use each day are safe. You may never have heard of NDT before, because we take our safety for granted. We expect to be able to switch on the TV without getting electrocuted.
