Cheap webhosting or Virtual Server?

A lot of people need reliable hosting for their sites. I got several emails about which hosting plan I recommend.

There are several steps for finding the right hosting plan and company.

Free web hosting or paid one? The first thing to know is that with cheap web hosting you really do get what you pay for.

There are several options for free web hosting, which is great for personal sites that do not require much functionality. If you need more flexibility, control and you intend to increase the amount of traffic you receive over time, you will need to pay for a web hosting provider.

Due to the big number of hosting providers cheap web hosting isn’t hard to find. For $5-10/month you will find good site hosting plan.

If you want more from your web hosting, like unlimited traffic, more space or increased speed the virtual server will be a smart choice.

Virtual Server is heavily threaded and designed to take advantage and scale on multi-processor computers with large amounts of memory.

A virtual private server (VPS) is a hosting environment that gives you your own Linux or Windows virtual machine. Each private server provides a protected area that operates as an independent server. It enables you to share the expense of hardware and network connections and to eliminate the difficulty of maintaining them. Keep in mind that although multiple VPS customers share hardware, they do not share software. It has its own, complete directory structure, and set of dedicated application software. You can restart it without affecting any other private server accounts which share the same hardware.

You can find a VPS for £14.99 (aprox $28) per month. You will get:

  • 7GB disk space
  • 128MB guaranteed memory
  • Unlimited monthly traffic

So cheap hosting or VPS? It all depends on your site needs.
