Features of Printer Toner

There are several factors to consider before purchasing printer toner:

  • Resolution
  • Finish
  • Flow and distribution
  • Grey scale
  • Imaging
  • Sharpness
  • Color

Understanding Toner Features

Toner is composed of polymers that bind with pigment in toner material to create the resulting image. The polymeric composition leaves a high resolution and glossy finish when applied to paper. This is known as “bonding.” Laser printers heat this material through a high-intensity light strike produced by the printer’s mechanism. Toner manufactured by Brother is pre-calibrated, so it will reach the correct heat temperature. It’s important to note that Brother printers are designed to allow for variable temperatures from one model to another. The specific Brother printer and model information is provided in an operations and maintenance manual contained in each shipping package. Recommendations for the correct toner is also included.

Brother Models and Compatible Toner

It’s easy to purchase printer toner for Brother printers. First, check the model number. Then, compare the model number to the recommended toner. For instance, Brother printers with model numbers DCP-7030, 7040, HL-2140, HL-2170W, MFC-7340, 7440N and 7840W require black toner with page yields from 1,500 to 2,600 for high yield. These toners provide crisp, sharp images with no shadows or smudges.

Color Toner for Brother Printers

Color printers are especially popular for advertising, sales, mechanical design and graphic arts. Brother offers an excellent supply of color printers like DCP-9040CN, and 9045CDN. These require color toners that are compatible with the printer model. Note that these are available in mono colors like cyan, yellow, magenta and four-color toners in toner drums. Laser jet toners are sold in cartridges and drums. Look for Brother toners in black cyan, magenta and yellow high yield cartridges. Toner numbers are listed clearly on the front of the package. Examples of toner numbers are:

  • BRT-TN360, black high yield, 2,600 pages
  • BRT-TN330, black 1,500 yield
  • BRT-TN115M magenta high-yield, 4,000 pages
  • BRT-TN115C cyan, high yield

For high-volume printing, it’s suggested to purchase toner in bulk to avoid printer down time. Store toner in ambient temperature in a dry place. In areas of high humidity, it’s advisable to store toner in its original container away from humid areas of the office or home. For high-volume printing, check the quantity of pages printed at least once a month. Change toner when printed images appear faded.
