Autumn is right around the corner, which means for much of the country, it’s time to put away the shorts and sneakers, and pull out the sweaters and jackets from the closet. Whether you’re a college student or own a successful business, staying in line with current trends and dressing to impress are always good habits to keep. These are the must-have men’s accessories for fall.

It may seem counter-intuitive to list sunglasses first (after all, this list is for autumn essentials, not summer essentials), but remember that with fall comes a sun that is lower in the sky. At times, it may seem that the sun is hovering just over the horizon nearly all day. So sunglasses will not only serve as a fashion accessory, you will likely find that you need them more than ever.
If you are in the market for a new pair of sunglasses, find sunglasses to meet your personal style. You can’t go wrong with companies like Ray-Ban, which counts among its famous frames the Wayfarers and Aviators. Think in terms of how your sunglasses can complement your own personal style, including your wardrobe, and don’t hesitate to buy more than one pair. A good pair of sunglasses is an investment.
When it comes to smartwatches, the options seem to grow with each passing day. The obvious choice, of course, is the Apple Watch. It is incredibly popular and makes sense for iPhone users. However, we personally find that the Moto 360 and upcoming Gear 3 are much better looking watches. And when it comes to fashion, the details matter (to say nothing of choosing the lesser-traveled path). Regardless of which smartwatch you choose, you will find that it can transform the way you interact with content, media, and the people around you.
The true selling point of a smartwatch (despite their inherent visual and technological appeal) is that it makes processes and interactions that you experience everyday more intuitive and seamless. Checking text messages and viewing emails can be done with the same simple body motion that you would use to check the time. It also allows you to do these things inconspicuously, rather than being “that guy” at the table who won’t put his phone down.
With crisp weather comes the opportunity to once again wear scarves. If you don’t wear scarves yourself, now is the time to reconsider. A nice scarf worn properly can make a man look mature and sophisticated (it doesn’t hurt in attracting wandering eyes, either). By comparison, a cheap scarf that is simply thrown around the neck makes a man look like he never grew up. Needless to say, avoid the Pittsburgh Steelers ware and go with something simple and timeless. And if you don’t know your scarf ties, learn them!
After what seems like quite a long dry spell, there are now several brand-new smartphones available for purchase or pre-order. Two of the best are without question the Apple iPhone 7 and Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. If you are in the market for a new smartphone, you can’t go wrong with either choice (though you may want to avoid the Galaxy Note, at least until they stop exploding). With the Galaxy S7, you get a water-resistant package that supports expandable memory up to 256GB. The phone also features dual-pixel technology for improved pictures, and can be used with Samsung’s new Gear VR virtual reality headset.
The new iPhone 7 Plus introduces advanced new camera systems (the front-facing camera system now has two lenses), a new mobile processor that is twice as fast as the iPhone 6, and all-new stereo speakers. Like Samsung’s Galaxy lineup, the iPhone 7 now also features water resistance for improved peace of mind in all weather conditions (or should you happen to spill your afternoon tea on it). And then there’s Apple’s new iOS 10. If you’re an Apple user, you’re likely already sold.
Sweaters and Jackets
With cooler weather coming, there is as much a need for new sweaters and jackets as there is gadgets. Avoid the brightly colored North Face gear and instead opt for something a bit more subtle and befitting your character. Clothing retailer J. Crew carries a number of fall jackets and sweaters that can be dressed up or down, yet never look anything other than mature and sophisticated. Jackets like the Wallace & Barnes boiled wool bomber jacket, for example, or their versatile and wearable field mechanic jacket. And when it comes to sweaters, well, you can’t go wrong with cashmere.
Of course, J. Crew is hardly your only option. From Ralph Lauren and Zara to bargain-brands H&M and Uniqlo, there are a number of retailers to choose from. And even if these clothing retailers don’t have a store in your town, their online shops make it easy to purchase items. Find items that work for you and that will serve as staple pieces in your wardrobe for years to come. What you wear informs how others see you, so don’t skimp on your appearance.
