External HDDs are very hot these days. The reason is simple: they offer a good cost per GB ratio.
In the last years there were 3 main trends:
- the prices per GB went down
- the capacity increased
- the miniaturization made the HDDs smaller and lighter.
Now the prices are great. For a 1tb external hard drive you will pay only £59.99. I remember when I wanted to get an external hard drive (1 TB) not too long ago, the price was around £200.
For extra portability you can opt for an extra portable hard drive. I use an Iomega eGo Portable 320GB Hard Disk Drive 5400rpm USB 2.0 8MB.
Iomega eGo Portable 320 Features
- Iomega eGo Portable Hard Disk Drive
- 320GB Capacity
- Interface: USB 2.0
- 5400 rpm Spindle Speed
- 8MB Cache Buffer
- Rugged: Perfect for travel environments, the ego includes a sleek aluminum enclosure and the Drop Guard feature protects the drive when dropped up to 1.3m (40% above the industry average)
- Secure: Receive a full suite of protection solutions when you purchase USB 2.0 Iomega eGo Hard Drives! Iomega now includes McAfee VirusScan Plus, Iomega QuikProtect, EMC Retrospect Express Backup software, and MozyHome Online Backup service to protect your data and your computer (software available via download)
- Capacity of 1,280,000 photos, 5920 hours of music and 480 hours of video
- Colour: Midnight Blue
It is small and light and it fits in my pocket. When I need extra space I use an western digital 1tb external hard drive.
I have had both the Western Digital and the Iomega eGo Portable hard disk drives for 2 years and both work great.

External Hdds are the best way to get extra space. They are super easy to use (just connect them via USB) and the price per GB is very low.
The newest models of external hard drives usually come with:
- Easy installation and set up. Just plug and play.
- Hi-Speed USB connection
- Good transfer rates
- Automatic backup software
- Cooler, quieter, eco-friendlier
- Small and easy to carry
- Huge storing capacities( 1TB, 2TB)
Why To Chose An External Hard Drive?
There are many advantages of having an external hard drive.
First you can take it with you and have your precious files everywhere you want and need. The latest models are so small and light that you can carry them easily in your pocket.
The second reason is price. The price for GB is very low compared with DVDs or blue rays. They are affordable even compared with external storages like: flash pens, SD cards, MMC cards and other similar devices.
Also an external HDD allows the user to back up or store important information separate from the main internal hard drive. This is very useful for backup purposes.
My HDD
Until now I’ve owned only Western Digital External Hard Drives and I was very satisfied with the performances.

I’m currently having a 320GB model but I’m thinking of upgrading to 1TB. Western Digital My Passport Essential 1TB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive – Black (foto -up) is the one I want to buy.
It cost only £131 and offers some great features:
- Automatic, continuous backup
- New updates for SmartWare Software available from Western Digital
- Password protection and 256-bit encryption, securing private or sensitive data
- Retrieving lost data effortlessly
- Adding extra storage space for photos, videos and music
Very cool isn’t it?
