In the last six months, Samsung has kicked out nearly a half dozen tablets onto the market. There has been a 10-inch behemoth, an 8.9-inch midrange device, a lithe 7-inch device and now, a 7.7-inch device that might be the best non-Apple tablet on the market. Who knows? It might even have Tim Cook sweating a bit.

The Samsung Galaxy 7.7 is especially notable because of its battery life. The device is advertised as having 10 hours of battery life while streaming video, but in after market tests the device has held on for 12 hours while streaming video and with Wi-Fi enabled. That is nearly an hour and a half longer than the iPad 2’s battery life and almost 3 times as long as the woeful Toshiba Thrive’s 4 hour and 42 minute lifespan. The 7.7 now holds the record for longest-lasting battery. And surprisingly, it isn’t really even a close contest.

Following the footsteps of Samsung Galaxy S2, the next impressive point about this device is its display. It’s as if the engineers at Samsung somehow found a way to get a little more juice out of AMOLED display. The screen is super bright and has shamed each of the other Samsung tablets it has been pitted against. Other devices simply look dull by comparison.

The device is not without drawbacks, however. It’s operating system, Honeycomb 3.2, is not without flaws. The auto-rotate feature is occasionally a bit slow and some users have reported spotty Wi-Fi connectivity. These are easy to look past when you hear Samsung’s assurance that an update to Ice Cream Sandwich is in the works. Though let’s hope that the update goes over more smoothly on the Galaxy 7.7 than it did on the ASUS Transformer or the Nexus S.

At about $650, the 7.7 is a bit pricy. The huge price tag is not unwarranted though. If you’re looking to get one of the best — if not the best — tablets on the market, you should take a good hard look at the Samsung Galaxy 7.7.

Sony, since buying out Ericsson`s stake in its mobile manufacturing operations, has gone on the offensive to create a wide range of smartphones for launch in 2012.

A total of around 11 models have been alluded to in leaked information, but last week two of these were revealed in more detail thanks to sneakily snapped photographs and some specification data.

Sony will continue to target the entry level end of the mobile market with the LT21i, also codenamed the Tapioca, according to sources quoted by PocketDroid.

The Tapioca will feature a single core processor which is running at a lowly 800MHz, a far cry from the dual and quad core smartphones that will surely dominate the top end of the market this year.

With a 3.2 inch touchscreen display, a 3.2 megapixel camera and 4GB of storage onboard, the Tapioca is shaping up to be quite a typical budget-oriented handset. However, if Sony is able to get the pricing right and do something created with the Android 2.3 platform then it could undercut rivals like the HTC Primo and ZTE Tania.

Whether or not Western customers will ever be able to buy the Tapioca remains to be seen as such low specs indicate that it might instead be targeted at emerging markets in Asia and Africa.

Sony`s second offering is the LT22i, also known as the Nypon in the manufacturer`s labs. As its product number indicates it will be a more powerful sibling to the Tapioca, with images suggesting that it will look quite similar to the Xperia Arc S thanks to a very thin shell.

Other specification information relating to the Nypon is not available, but expect a faster processor and better camera, along with a screen that outdoes that of the Tapioca, if not its immediate rivals.

Further Sony leaks which appeared online in recent days have revealed details about a handset called the Xperia U, previously codenamed the Kumquat.

This is likely to be another incremental step up the technical ladder from the Nypon, sporting a 3.5 inch touchscreen display with an impressive native resolution of 480×854. This too will be echoing the look of the Xperia S, although on a smaller scale given the 4.3 inch HD screen of its high end stable mate.

The Xperia U will integrate a dual core 1GHz processor, although upon launch it could well be preinstalled with Android 2.3 despite the fact that Android 4.0 is already emerging as the operating system of choice in 2012.

The Xperia U and Sony`s tasty sounding prototypes are probably going to be competing for room on the market alongside new BlackBerry deals this year. The BBX operating system developed by RIM from its tablet-oriented QNX software should help to update the BlackBerry range so that it can take on Android, iOS and Windows Phone without looking a little long in the tooth.

Mobile manufacturer ZTE had something of a surprise hit on its hands when it launched the original Blade. The budget end of the smartphone market had been crying out for a handset that was not just a cheap, almost unusable interpretation of the more powerful high end mobiles and ZTE delivered.

This does ratchet up the pressure somewhat for the Blade 2, which ZTE has introduced to be priced just above the original. As such the improvements are somewhat incremental, but since the Blade 2`s predecessor was already worthy of praise this is not really a negative thing.

It is probably worth noting main similarity before checking out the main alterations and the 3.5 inch 480×800 touchscreen display is consistent across both Blade models. The high resolution combined with the responsive capacitive touch technology make the Blade 2 feel slicker and more expensive than its closes rivals. Even if you are going to buy another budget handset with a screen measuring 3.5 inches across the diagonal, the Blade 2 will still be more desirable as rival resolutions rarely come close to matching it across identical screen areas.

ZTE has added an 800MHz single core processor to the Blade 2. This is 200MHz faster than the chip integrated into the original, but rather than using this oomph to increase the overall speed of the phone ZTE has decided to give it a more modern operating system in the form of Android 2.3.

You can flick between five homescreens, adding your own widgets and shortcuts. You can also add your favourite apps to a shortcut bar placed on the bottom of the primary homescreen, so there is plenty of scope for customising the way the ZTE Blade 2 operates.

Wi-Fi is at hand to let you surf the web without eating into your monthly data allowance, while location-based apps and services work well thanks to the GPS functionality. Social networking fans will need to visit the Android Market and download applications to support the likes of Facebook and Twitter once they have the Blade 2 up and running, but this is hardly a tough task to accomplish.

One of the most noticeable improvements comes in the camera department as the Blade 2 has not one but two snappers onboard. The primary camera on the rear now has a five megapixel sensor rather than the 3.2 unit found on the original. There is also a secondary front-facing camera which makes it possible to enjoy video calling with friends.

You get a good number of shooting modes and effects to try out and although it will not win any awards for photography, the ZTE Blade 2 does do much more than most budget Android handsets in this area.

The Blade 2 does not arguably do enough to make it worth using mobile recycling to sell your original Blade and make the upgrade. However, its price is competitive enough to give first time buyers an easy choice when they start looking for an affordable Android smartphone.

It is widely known that Microsoft will be attempting to combine its motion-sensing console peripheral Kinect and the associated software capabilities with its upcoming Windows 8 operating system. Now it looks like device manufacture Asus is going to capitalise on this partnership by building Kinect sensors into next-gen laptops.

Kinect arrived on the scene in 2010 for the Xbox 360 home console, allowing gamers to use their whole bodies as controllers. The gesture-based fun goes beyond gameplay, as Kinect users can interact with menus and media content by flailing their arms or, more accurately, making specific motions.

When Windows 8 arrives later in 2012 it is thought that Microsoft will have baked compatibility with this gesture-sensing peripheral into the operating system, leaving it up to manufacturers to actually harness it with their own hardware.

A report on The Daily has suggested that Asus could be one of the first to take advantage of Kinect-like controls. It has even allegedly created a range of prototype laptops which have motion sensors located just above the display. This would replace any existing webcam that you might find on contemporary laptops, but since Kinect already doubles up as a webcam this should not be an issue.

If Kinect goes portable then we could start to see people sitting in coffee shops and flapping their hands about in front of their laptops rather than physically touching it to control the menus. This is definitely an intuitive way to use a computer, but is not likely to completely replace things like keyboards and mice, at least in the short term.

Of course Windows 8 will not only be available on laptops and desktops, but also on tablet devices. This is because Microsoft has deliberately set out to make the operating system as scalable as possible so that it can take on Apple`s iPad with its own set of slender, powerful slate gadgets.

This might mean that Kinect will also begin to feature on Windows 8 tablets at some point in the future. Given that Asus has been particularly successful with its Eee Pad Transformer tablets running Google`s Android operating system, it might be well positioned to make Windows 8 work outside of laptops and desktops.

Microsoft has been given a clear indication that Kinect is popular amongst consumers thanks to the fact that more than 10 million of the peripheral have been sold for the Xbox 360. Upon its launch it quickly inspired a number of inventive programmers to come up with their own gesture-based software for both practical purposes and advanced gaming interaction.

With officially sanctioned support in Windows 8, Kinect could come to a broader mainstream audience. Asus and its fellow gadget manufacturers will need to be the driving force behind this revolution, although animosity between Microsoft and its main rival mean that the Apple iPad is unlikely to get such functionality.

When the first Motorola Xoom was released in 2011 it acted as a showcase for the then new Android 3.0 operating system as well as dual core processing on a tablet. A year on has seen the market develop further and in an attempt to diversify the Xoom 2 Media Edition (ME) has been launched. It pitches itself as a more portable alternative to the fully fledged Xoom 2, but retains most of its features. Does this make it a worthy tablet choice or just another iPad knock-off?

The Xoom 2 ME occupies a relatively obscure part of the market when it comes to screen size because its 8.2 inch display is not quite up there with the 10.1 inch Android alternatives when it comes to area. However, it is a sight bigger than the seven inch models like the Amazon Kindle Fire and HTC Flyer while still being about the same weight as these portable tablets. This means Motorola will be looking to attract the attention of people who want a tablet they can take with them wherever they go while still giving them big-screen thrills.

The display of the Xoom 2 ME warrants further praise thanks to its resolution of 1280×800. This is identical to that of the full sized Xoom 2, but since the pixels are fitted into a smaller area you actually get crisper onscreen imagery. Only a few people will really find the difference that significant, but in a tech-heavy market it is necessary to gain lots of small victories in order to succeed.

If you were to pull apart the slender frame of the Xoom 2 ME you would find a 1.2GHz dual core CPU and a standard allocation of 16GB of storage space. Wi-Fi connectivity is the main means by which the tablet will take you online as there is no 3G available. To keep the weight low and the chassis slim Motorola has chosen to reduce the size of the Xoom 2 ME`s battery to 3300mAh, which is less than half that of the full Xoom 2. This means you will be plugging it back in after about six hours of use.

Cameras are now commonly found on tablets and the Xoom 2 ME does not disappoint as it comes equipped with a five megapixel rear-facing unit and a video call-friendly secondary camera above the screen. You can record 720p HD clips if you wish and Motorola has chosen to add an LED flash at the back, which is less usual to see on tablets.

Android 3.2 is preinstalled, along with the usual selection of customised Motorola interface elements and applications. It seems likely that version 4.0 of Android will arrive on the Xoom 2 ME via an update at some point in 2012, although without an official release date this will have to be put to the back of the user`s mind.

In all the Xoom 2 ME makes a convincing attempt to fit into an area of the tablet market which is unusually bereft of alternatives. By not directly competing with the iPad or Android-based rivals it could win a unique section of tablet owners whose portable media players no longer cut the mustard when it comes to functionality.

Pop-up MicroLite review

Testing the Pop-up MicroLite was very simple. All you have to do is to turn this little device on and off.

After the device is turned on all the user have to do is to point it where it is needed. Because it come with a 3M sticker it is easy to placed in the area that needs to be illuminated.

In the last few days I was testing the A4Tech HoleLess wireless mouse. This is a smart mouse which has a lot of useful features like screen capture, tutor pen and multimedia, internet and office functions.

If you want a good wireless mouse all you have to do is to insert the wireless multi-link receiver into an USB port and put a battery into the mouse and you are done. If you want to use all the features of this mouse you will have to install the software (you can download it from www.a4tech.com/g9) and read the manual.

A4Tech HoleLess wireless mouse has an innovative hidden sensor which keeps away the dust and liquids. By doing this the mouse is very precise even when it run on bed, sofa or carpet.

A4Tech HoleLess wireless mouse review

I had to work a little to make this review because this mouse has a lot of useful functions. It allows customization so the possibilities are almost endless from opening documents to launching your default browser in just one muse click.

You have a lot of options with this mouse. Below you will find a list with the features which are the most useful for me.

Screen capture tool

This is by far the most useful feature for a blogger. There are many times when you want an image to publish on your blog and the save option is not working. I am not talking about breaking the copyright laws. The images I use on my blog are images of products which come from the manufacturers but in many cases it takes time to find the original image so I save a duplicate published on a different website.

This is where the screen capture tool of the HoleLess mouse is handy. From one mouse click I get the image I want. It is really simple.

The captured images can be edited from the mouse software which is also really simple to use.

Tutor pen

When I am developing a new website with my partner I want to point out different things so the tutor pen function is really useful.

By using this feature I can draw arrows and all sorts of things to highlight the most important elements from an image.

Gesture 16-in-1

This is a feature which allows the user to get maximum from this mouse. You can customize the gestures and after that it is easy to zoom in or out on a page, scroll up and down, open, save a file just to name a few.

One click mouse sensitivity adjustment

You can choose the mouse sensitivity by pressing one button. I don’t like my mouse cursor to move very fast on my screen so I have opt for the 800DPI sensitivity.

Internet, Office and Multimedia

The HoleLess mouse can be personalized to quickly execute Internet / multimedia commands, such as: Backward, Forward, Stop, Refresh, Search, My Favorite, Web Browser, E-mail, Media Player (Open), Previous, Next, Stop, Play/Pause, Mute, Volume+, Volume and so on.

There are a lot of useful functions here and the best part is that you can customize them to fit your needs.
